For as long as I can remember, one of the first questions people ask me when I tell them I’m Cape Verdean is:
“Where is Cape Verde?”
It’s a question I’ve answered hundreds of times.
I usually explain that Cabo Verde is a small island nation off the west coast of Africa. About half a million people. Ten volcanic islands. A rich culture. Incredible music. Incredible food. Incredible people.
Then I watch as they politely nod, still trying to place it on a map.
This summer, something changed.
The World Finally Saw Cabo Verde
For the first time in our nation’s history, Cabo Verde qualified for the FIFA World Cup.
Nobody expected much from us.
We were drawn into a group with Spain and Uruguay, two countries with generations of soccer history, world-class talent, and millions upon millions of supporters.
Yet somehow…
We held Spain to a 0-0 draw.
We battled Uruguay to a thrilling 2-2 draw.
Then came Argentina.
The defending World Cup champions.
One of the greatest teams on the planet.
For 120 minutes, Cabo Verde didn’t play like a team that was simply happy to be there. We played like we belonged. Argentina ultimately escaped with a 3-2 victory after extra time, but by the final whistle something had changed.
The world knew who Cabo Verde was.
Billions of people watched our flag.
Heard our national anthem.
Learned our story.
Rooted for the underdog.
As a Cape Verdean, I can’t fully describe what that meant.
For once, I didn’t have to explain where Cabo Verde was.
The world had already met us.
Small Doesn’t Mean Small Impact
Watching Cabo Verde compete reminded me why I started GC Network Solutions back in 2009.
We’re not the biggest IT company in Georgia.
We don’t have thousands of employees.
We don’t have massive marketing budgets or flashy commercials.
But every single day, we compete with companies much larger than us.
And just like Cabo Verde, we’ve learned something important:
Size doesn’t determine capability.
Preparation does.
Passion does.
Consistency does.
Character does.
Every Client Is Our World Cup
Large companies often have the advantage of recognition.
People know their names before they even walk through the door.
Smaller companies have to earn every opportunity.
That’s been our journey.
Every project.
Every server migration.
Every cybersecurity deployment.
Every network upgrade.
Every late-night emergency call.
Every client referral.
Each one has been another chance to prove ourselves.
Not because we’re trying to be the biggest.
But because we want to be the company people trust.
Why Visibility Matters in Business
One of the biggest lessons from this World Cup wasn’t about soccer.
It was about visibility.
Talent has always existed in Cabo Verde.
The difference is that the world finally had the opportunity to see it.
The same is true in business.
Many great companies spend years doing exceptional work before people recognize them.
Recognition rarely comes overnight.
It comes from showing up consistently.
Doing quality work.
Keeping your word.
Helping people.
Eventually, people notice.
Representing Something Bigger
One thing I’ve always been proud of is bringing my heritage into everything I do.
Whether it’s supporting Cabo Verde, sharing our culture, or simply telling people where my family comes from, it’s become part of who I am.
GC Network Solutions reflects that same philosophy.
Technology isn’t just about computers.
It’s about people.
Relationships.
Trust.
Community.
Helping organizations succeed so they can focus on what they do best.
That’s what we’ve tried to build for the past 16 years.
Congratulations, Cabo Verde
No, we didn’t lift the World Cup trophy.
But in many ways, we won something just as meaningful.
Respect.
Recognition.
A place on the world stage.
As a Cape Verdean, I couldn’t be prouder.
And as the owner of GC Network Solutions, I’m reminded that success isn’t always measured by championships.
Sometimes it’s measured by changing perceptions.
By proving you belong.
By making people remember your name.
Here’s to Cabo Verde.
Here’s to every small business that’s ever been underestimated.
And here’s to continuing to show the world exactly who we are.
At GC Network Solutions, we believe every business, no matter its size, deserves enterprise-level technology, dependable cybersecurity, and an IT partner that shows up when it matters most. If you’re looking for a team that’s earned its reputation through preparation, persistence, and trust, we’d love the opportunity to help your business succeed.
