So we’ve all seen the movies featuring the “basic” IT consultant. Usually we see many of the same patterns. It’s typically a nerdy, tasteless, young to middle aged man who is about 30-100 pounds overweight. They have little to no friends and are VERY socially awkward because of it. They rarely go out and are usually cooped up inside. When they are not working on the computer, they are playing video games or watching TV and eating junk food. Oh, and not to mention, they still live with their parents. These are the stereotypes that have been created for the average IT consultant. IT consultants have a poor reputation and you’d be surprised to find out that most of us are just regular people. I know! Mind blowing right? Sure, we are pretty nerdy. But that’s not to say that we don’t have any friends or are unable to interact with others. In fact, I’m sure that most would say we have a great sense of humor because of how nerdy we are. I mean, name someone who can make a joke out of Planck’s constant. I’ll wait. You’d also be surprised to know that most of us actually love to learn. And not just about the “boring computer stuff”. If you actually had a conversation with us, you’d find out just how much we know. From astronomy to music. You name it! Not to brag, but we’d probably be the best ones to get stuck on an island with because of how much we know. We can probably hold a conversation for way longer than you think, especially if it’s something we are passionate about. Oh, and I forgot to mention, not all of us are overweight. That’s right. We can find time in our day to exercise both our brains AND our bodies. Yup, we got brains and gains. You probably didn’t know that though because we are always portrayed as lazy and unhealthy. Most of us are NOT living with our parents and in fact have homes and families of our own. So why are we always shown living so poorly? It’s just a basic IT consultant stereotype, along with the rest of these. Now I’m sure there are IT consultants out there who perfectly fit the description of the “average IT consultant”. However, if you actually got the chance to have a conversation with one of us, you’d find that most of us are actually healthy, married, have friends, and can hold a conversation. We are not just “that weird guy” who comes in to the office to save the day when a server is down. Sure most of us are indeed “nerdy”, but who said nerdy was a bad thing?
