One of the reasons I enjoy astronomy is because it has a way of putting things into perspective. It also reminds me that proactive cybersecurity follows many of the same principles as modern astronomy.
Every night, while most of us are asleep, telescopes around the world quietly scan the sky looking for change. A new comet. A distant supernova. An asteroid that wasn’t there yesterday.
The recently commissioned Vera C. Rubin Observatory is taking that mission to an entirely different level. Designed to photograph the entire southern sky every few nights, the observatory is already discovering thousands of previously unknown asteroids and generating hundreds of thousands of alerts as it watches the universe in motion. Its job isn’t simply to admire the stars; it’s to notice when something changes.
That got me thinking.
Cybersecurity isn’t all that different.

Imagine if astronomers only pointed a telescope at the sky after someone reported seeing an asteroid.

The question is whether you’re watching for them.
Looking Up and Looking Ahead
Astronomy teaches us that awareness creates opportunity.
Sometimes that opportunity is a breathtaking discovery that changes our understanding of the universe.
Other times, it’s identifying a potential danger long before it becomes tomorrow’s headline. During its early observations, Rubin discovered thousands of previously unknown asteroids, and over the next decade, it’s expected to identify millions more while helping strengthen planetary defense efforts.
The same mindset applies to technology.
